Diamondback Explorer is damn cool ship, has some great maneuverability I just don't really like the cockpit. But I was certain the Asp Explorer is the more pricey of the four ships, those being: Diamondback Scout/Explorer and Asp Scout/Explorer.

The Asp Scout is cheaper than it's bigger brother, main difference being it's tail fins. Also, the Asp's can take quite the beating and can surprisingly hold their own in battle too. The Diamondback's not so much, they are thin!

i'm confused about the exploring thing. On the galaxy map, how can i tell which systems are unexplored, so i know where to go to scan for data ?? a screenshot would be awesome if possible. i have searched online and read what people have said but it seems inconsistent.

and let say i go to this system and when i reach start it says something about anomaly. then i fly away from star and scan and it says xx objects discovered. how will i know when there is nothing left to discover? assuming im using the basic starting scanner.

There are three types of discovery scanners, they are: basic scanners (100ls range), intermediate scanners (1000ls range) and advanced scanners (infinite range). They are used to scan the SYSTEM to identify the stars, planets and moons within the system. By doing this you will also see if other CMDR's have discovered the planets in the system.

Then you get surface scanners, these are used to scan the stars, planets and moons to get a more informative result of the composition of them. By doing this you will receive better payouts and will allow you to 'put your name' on the planet once scanned, discovered and handed in the cartographic information.

Had a pretty cool time last night, even though i kinda stuffed up at the end. don't laugh at my cash balance, only been playing a few hours.

so i cruised around in my starting Sidewinder doing the odd bounty and courier mission. upgraded it a bit for those tasks. then i decided to try out mining. bought mining lasers and refinery and was good to go. struggled to find bloody ringed planet but when i eventually did, mining proved too boring so i gave it up and flew back to Eravate (Russel Ring) to swap mining lasers back to mighty pulse lasers.

I noticed that the shipyard had a snazzy Eagle for about 45k. I had around 70k so thought it was worth the punt. Was about to pull the trigger when I noticed that the Viper Mk 3 was going for 145k. I sold every last piece of kit on sidewinder in order to try and fund this shiney new purchase. At the end, even with the trade in, I was about 5k short!

But no worries, I had a mission to turn it at Sylvester City! So i hobbled along in my undefended and woefully unequipped gimped Sidewinder. got there and turned in mission, but no shipyard! So then i check map to find nearest station, and saw Arakahm Market (or something like that) and it was closer than Russel Ring. But when i got there, they didn't sell the Viper!

Hobbled back to Russel Ring and debated for a while about the risk of spending all my money and not having anything left for insurance. But given the apparently superior kit of the Viper, I went for it. i then checked message board and noticed a simple data delivery mission to a star 5Ly away that paid 16k. Easy money, i thought. I would then have a small safety buffer of insurance cash.

Gingerly, and with much trepidation I eased out of the hanger and headed to the nearby system, hoping to avoid any attack on my uninsured new ship. Thankfully, the trip went by without incident, and I pulled into the space port docking bay without any drama. Excitedly called up the Mission Board to claim my 16k and....nothing. It did not show up. I thought about it for a moment and realised my stuff up. At previous station I had chosen GALAXY MAP and set my route, forgetting to actually ACCEPT the mission

You won't know, could try looking at the system maps (if you have the system/trade data). But best way is to leave the bubble for that. Common misconception is that you don't actually have to travel that far to find something that is undiscovered.

For any exploring outside of the bubble I would recommend at least a jump range of 20LY.

To get a feel for for exploring I would maybe suggest a small round trip. Start off by going to Beattlegues. If you wanna see a truly massive star and only being ~500LY away, it's close enough to do in one evening. Then maybe spread your wings a little more and go visit the Peleides Nebula and visit the Maia system and Obsidian Orbital and the black hole there, or perhaps Merope 5c and see the alien Barnacals.

Some nice places to get a taste for exploration.

don't be fooled, if you are not one of those "stop and admire the colour of every flower" kind of players exploring is going to be tedious AF.

And you DO have to go quite a distance to discover something new. In all the time I've spent in Elite that has only happened to me once.

And get some extra strong coffee, cause odds are good you will fall asleep on occasion while traveling from one star to the next to do a deep scan. 30,000Ls is FAR
