I read an international review that the remote play is laggy even when using the LAN and this it very troubling.
Will you let us know how it performs when eventually get yours from Kalahari.
I noticed on takealot that it's marked down to R1119 already.
That price from Takealot is for today only.
They also have some other awesome gaming deals which I've posted here.
I was tempted to get it but I already have a PS Vita.
Thanks for the summary of goodies.
I have noticed that TAKEALOT has been down for maintenance for the most part of today. Seems the TAKEALOT servers can't handle the influx of people accessing the website for all it's specials.
It's due for it's release of 12pm specials and the site is still down.
EDIT: It just came back up.....
Got mine from when TA had it on special. Eventually got around to setting it up, which was quick and easy. The actual device is very small. You can only hook it up via HDMI to a TV/Monitor, and a HDMI cable is included which helps. Also in the box is a PS Vita case with a download code for 3 games (Velocity 2x, Olli Olli and some other game I can't recall now). The system does have 1GB internal memory for if you don't have a (pricey) PS Vita memory card. It also can take physical VITA game cards. Can connect to the net via WIFI or LAN, and has one USB port to initially pair your DS3 or DS4.
Once up and running the interface looks exactly like the PS Vita's interface. I updated to the latest firmware, and see up to four controllers can now be linked to the system. Themes as well is supported.
I connected to the net via WIFI, and I'm getting 2 out of 3 bars. I went to the my download list, and me being on PS+ since it started there was quite a few games available to download. Now from what I read not all VITA games work on this. For a complete list go here. It seems the list gets updated, so I'm hoping that games like Uncharted get added sometime.
Then I tried the remote play feature by linking to my PS4. Now everywhere I read that using this over WIFI was very iffy. I had no issues though and it linked quite easy. After linking it shows the PS4 interface and you can browse the menus and play games. First I tried something a bit basic and started up Binding of Isaac. Game started and I managed to get up to The Womb before I died. I did notice very slight input lag though. I then tried something a bit more system heavy and started up Shadow of Mordor. Game started withouth a hitch and soon I found myself running around stealth killing orcs. Again, slight input lag, but the game was very playable. Played about 10 minutes without any hassles. I also tried a few VITA games, and I see the DS4's touchpad also works in these games like a touch screen (LEGO games that I tried). Busy downloading a few more games like my Final Fantasy PSone collection that I have been itching to play.
Both my PS4 (9m from router, through walls,88%) and PSTV (14m from router, through walls,2 out of 3 bars) is connected via WIFI. For optimal connectivity they do suggest wired though. I think the difference comes in that my WIFI router supports up to AC1900. I do have a N600 Router somewhere, so would like to test it on that as well sometime and report back.
All in all I'm quite impressed with the PS TV. It does exactly what I wanted it to do. Pity not all VITA games are supported, but the game list is quite vast if you also consider the PSone, PSP and mini games. Regarding the remote play, if you have a bog standard router, I guess it won't work as good (or at all).
I did a few quick tests with mine this weekend... Am busy playing Dust on my PS4, so I tried remote play. Our wifi here sucks (lots of trees), and setting up my own hotspot would just add to the noise, so I crimped myself come cat5e cable running from my bedroom to my living room. Both my PS4 and PSTV are plugged into the same 100MBit switch. I was considering getting a gigabit switch, but that won't make a difference in this application, because the PSTV (not sure about the PS4) is only 100MBit.
On this setup, with the PSTV hooked up to a 24" gaming screen, I found that the 1080i you can set the display to seems to be upscaled, but using 720p yields very similar results. I'm sure they downscale to 720p at the PS4 for transport to the PSTV, and then upscale again to 1080i if you have the option selected. Either way, text can look quite aliased.
The input lag was there, but hardly noticeable in Dust.
I tried out Persona 4 for a few minutes. You can really see the low native resolution of the vita on a 24" screen. I'm not sure I want to try it on anything bigger... That being said, it still looks good knowing what it is.
