I'm a big fan of horror games. Unfortunately it's a genre that's had some really mediocre games. I mean Silent Hill 2 came out in 2001 and Amnesia: The Dark Descent came out in 2010. In my eyes they were the two best horror games up until now. There have been so many games that tried to be both scary and good but failed miserably.

Outlast changed this. We've got a good horror game again!

It's a first person survival horror game set in a big asylum where something went horribly wrong. You play as a journalist who got a tip from someone who was inside about the evil things that were going on in there. Your video camera is your life line during most of the game as it often provides your only way of seeing in the darkness. It's also a way for the story to progress as you film things for once you get out of the asylum.

Most people don't last more than 30 minutes in the game before they switch it off and never play it again. Which is a shame because once you get past the initial pure horror the game has a good story to tell. I found myself playing in short bursts but later grew accustomed to the game and I finished most of the DLC in one sitting.

And the DLC (Whistleblower) is a must play if you get Outlast! It's even better than the original game.

I loved it and I'm very glad to say that Outlast 2 is in development and will most likely be released this year.

(My first ever) Entry: The Banner Saga

So The Banner Saga... I saw Totalbiscuits' WTF is of this game about a year ago and thought to myself, "I have to have this". Well I finally picked this on the Steam Winter Sale over the holidays, and invested some time into this title over the weekend. And to sum up my experience in one word, Amazing!

I love the aesthetics of this game, the comic like graphics and drawings. The music plays such a huge role and just draws you into this expanding story and immersing world that seems to evolve around you (though in your head). The experience I think is one of a kind where the developers were able to make it feel like you were playing through the chapters of an actual book. The dialogue is brilliantly written and very little verbally directed which adds to the whole experience and makes you imagine this world as if you were reading a story, not playing through it.

It's actually difficult to explain for me. The world I create for myself when reading a book is unique to me and this is what it feels like. But by playing a game, the aesthetics and visuals all add together to aid you in imagining this world and adventure. All of this with the added idea of being able to choose your story or at least the decisions you make affect the story, which all adds to the feelings and investments of yourself in the story and it's characers.

The turn-based game play is superbly done and doesn't detract you from the main focus, the story. Which I believe is where the attraction comes from and keeps you involved, but it's the game-play that keeps you entertained. You tend to invest yourself in the characters, when someone gets killed in combat you actually feel some remorse, sorrow and pity.

This is one truly great game and story. Though I have not completed it (as yet), I cannot stop recommending it to friends and mates. I was completely immersed in this game till the wee hours of the morning. Like a good book, this is a title that really works your imagination and makes it all that more difficult to put down or walk away from. And that's the difference between gaming and reading, games these days don't make you use your imagination, sure it detracts you from day-to-day life and is an escape or release. But nothing really pulls you into a fantasy world quite like reading a good book, and this is what makes The Banner Saga so unique.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have to go loose myself...

    Let’s try this again:

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris

Has your friend every annoyed you so much you’ve imagined impaling them on to some sharp spikes? Ever had the urge to toss a grenade at your SO and send them flying? Well now you can. Sort of. More of that later. First, the obligatory blurb describing the game:

Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris is an isometric 1-4player co-op game developed by Tomb Raider developers, Crystal Dynamics, and sequel to the award winning Guardian of Light. Unlike 2013’s dark and gritty reboot, Temple of Osiris (from here on referred to as ToO) puts you back in the shoes of the experienced Lara Croft of yesteryear. Back are her duel pistols, her crop top and short shorts, but unfortunately for those otherwise hoping, her breast reduction appears here to stay.

The thin plot involves the accidental resurrection of god of Egypt, Set, and your aim as heroine Lara Croft is (of course) to once again save the world (you’d think she’d have remembered making this same mistake back in TR4?). The plot is irrelevant really. It is paper-thin and is merely there to serve as reason to venture through (and die in – many times) the locales of Eqypt under Set’s wrath.
Fans of Diablo will feel right at home in ToO’s isometric viewpoint, and the game plays very similarly to that with the addition of brain-twisting puzzles and death defying platforming. But enough of that, let’s get to the nitty gritty:

The game is incredibly fun to play with friends (or lovers - if they aren’t the type to get angry with you for their ‘accidental’ impaling/bombing). The game is all about teamwork, but there is also some healthy competition at play. Most of the game’s fun and hilarity comes from the multitude of options available for you to kill your teammates (to steal their loot perhaps?). Hilarity ensues as you and your friends try to one-up one another as you progress through the levels, and this is definitely a title that should not be played alone (although that option is available). When the digital lives of your friends are in your hands, and the only way for them to survive the treacherous tightrope is to trust in you holding onto it, the temptation to send them plummeting down to their death seconds before they make it across is too great. Need to place a grenade to bomb a rolling ball across the room for puzzle purposes? Well, someone needs to roll that ball into place, and just try not detonating the bomb as they make their way into that brightly coloured ring to do exactly that. It’s practically asking you to do it.

Overall, ToO is a very well designed, exciting title with a distinct ‘indie’ feel, but has some great set-piece moments that make it feel like something greater. The game makes full use of the new-gen consoles’ hardware, so it’s also very easy on the eyes, and I feel like the awesome lighting effects should definitely be highlighted in that regard.

In closing, this is an awesome game that will give you a near-AAA experience for a fraction of the cost. Stop wasting your time reading this and go download it, invite 3 friends over, buy a couple of drinks, and let the mayhem begin. Might I suggest a tequila shot for every death?
