What do you mean "you had metal"? There are many good metal bands out there today. I personally enjoy the progression bands are making in redefining the genres of metal we know and love. The prog metal scene is especially vibrant and bursting with new potential these days. I'm always amazed to find new artists and bands that aren't afraid to demonstrate their technical ability (so-called "wankery") for the sake of scaring off mainstream listeners.

Just don't give my anything 'core. I hate 'core.

What makes metal "metal" is the style in which the music is written. I don't think metal can be graded as rock, or visa versa. Metal is primarily influenced by classical writing styles, whilst rocks stems from blues. You'll often hear prog metal bands incorporating elements of jazz into their writing, which I absolutely love!
