Not many games scare me anymore. I'm so desensitised to violence and scares as I've been playing games and watching movies of this genre since before I was 10 [emoji14], but some of those moments in the article were definitely big scares back in their day. It's still my favourite genre however and I'm very glad it seems to be making a resurgence this gen.

I remember a sport in Doom 3 where you're walking down a dark blood spattered corridor, hearing scary sound effects and the lights are flickering on and off, and from around a curve in the corridor, you see a huge ,really scary looking shadow, but as you turn the corner, you see that it's just a body hanging from the ceiling panels just in front of the fluorescent lights so you calm down a bit. Just after that if I recall correctly, you enter a room and get ambushed by a bunch of monsters.

I tend to stay clear of scary games these days. Last "scary" game I bought was Resident Evil 6. Needless to say, I wasted R200.

What gets me though are those scary moments in non-scary games that come out of nowhere.

For example, Dark Souls. Taurus Demon, 1st encounter. The fear I felt upon seeing him jumping from that rooftop and rushing toward me was numbing.

Exactly, I have decent surround system. Playing uncharted 2 loud with wife watching. We heard the footsteps in the snow coming from behind, sneaking, almost stealthy. BANG 1st appearance of the the animal comes bounding out from the right growling clawing.
shoo shoo shoo, we both jumped to the left.

Last of us is epic for the same. Had the subs cranked up and running through a stage tripped an explosive. Got such a fright the controller left my hands but the worst part was hearing the shrapnel tear through the body.

I played Dead Space 3 (more surprise tactics than really scary) recently on the bedroom tv, and my wife would by in the bed next to be watching shows on the laptop or tablet, and the first couple of times something jumped out at me each time I played, I would jump and she would just laugh at me.

My current scary game is Among the sleep. It's not scary with loads of monsters. They scare you with sound and visuals. I have a new rule, I only play it during day light and I only play it when people are on TS.

brendanvb - you need to give it time, its rather complex with the puzzles and what you need to do. Its a great game

I tried to play that as the concept is very original, but it feels incredibly low budget and dated. I know it IS low budget but some indie devs are really able to achieve a lot with limited resources. So I just couldn't get into it.
