Another thing to check is whether you are running in admin mode and also try win xp sp3 compat mode.
Cleaning out your drivers isn't necessary, the installers for the drivers take care of the uninstall/upgrade process quite well, their earlier incarnations didn't. Rolling back drivers however, I would recommend cleaning the drivers out.

@Mephisto_Helix: You definatly need SP3. If your still running XP, SP3 is old enough for software devs to assume people have updated by now. Btw, I have two machines running SP3 at home and many at the office (in the process of upgrading to Win 7) and there are no mystical internet issues, the upgrade should be smooth. Double click installer, click install, reboot, done. Just saying that its a safe and recommended upgrade.

Been said already, but you ALWAYS need to make sure your graphics drivers are up to date before installing new games. Its a PC gaming tradition as old as the first Voodoo 3D cards, with good reason If they aren't up to date and you get visual glitches or crashes in a game, you can almost immediately chalk it up to that.

Grats on your new CE Dragon Age, once you actually get playing, you'll quickly forget about these problems, probably about a whole lot else as well
