Does playing video games really improve your brain power?

I'd be surprised if it doesn't improve stuff like driving a car. Fast reactions, situational awareness etc.

    Actually improving intelligence...doubt it.

I think a more important question would be how much more (or less) of an effect it has on cognitive development than, say, watching TV. Also, I wonder if there's any benefit of having gaming as a hobby for the elderly particularly in regards to holding off cognitive degradation associated with aging. I hope to think that I'll be less of an "old person" than typical "old people" who's hobbies are a bit less... mentally demanding.

I believe that video games can definitely improve reactions, concentration, and that playing certain games could increase your knowledge of certain things.

Yeah definitely. For example, Far Cry 3 taught me which animals I have to skin to make different kinds of pouches and wallets.

Definitely improves hand-to-eye coordination, at least in my experience.
