    Default Raspberry Pi

So I'm thinking of starting a little home media server and thus thinking of getting a Raspberry Pi to do so.

Has anyone here had or done this and what are your general thoughts?
I don't need it have storage capacity, this is why I'm wanting the Pi, small and lightweight. I just want it to be able to output to my TV and stream the media from a network store.

It's good until you want to play 4k or hi10p video, then it dies a laggy horrible death of pixelation and artifacting.

Other than that it is pretty good as a HTPC. It will play most 1080p content with out any trouble. Try and get the Rpi Model 2 B+ it's a Quad core 900mhz ARM-A7 and has 1GB RAM. Then install OSMC or OpenElec, Set it up with your home network and you have a HTPC with streaming capabilities.

Thanks G. Any idea where I would buy a RPi

I know my mate is using a RPi and to quote, "Handles 1080p 3d 7.1 DTS better than a mid price laptop"

I have the original Raspberry Pi that i setup with RaspBMC.
I used a USB wifi dongle to connect it to my network. I then used my android phone to control the device.
Thus no need to get a spare wireless keyboard and mouse.
I also used a USB port on my TV to power the unit so when I put my TV on the Pi would boot up too.
The device worked off of a shared folder on my PC.
It played perfectly until i tried 1080p. This however is because of my wireless router at the time.
I'm sure the device itself could handle 1080p.
I purchased mine for around R300 and i got a free cover for it - this was however through a "contact" but the price shouldn't be much more.

The new Raspberry Pi 2 Model B is pretty awesome. Quad core with 1 Gig RAM. Much better than the previous models.

There are other types of PCs that are similar to the Pi too, but the Pi community support is massive.
