Competitive play? Well if it doesn't have to be a fps then Audiosurf is ideal. It's about beating scores while listening to your favourite music. You are not on the tracks at the same time as other people but I enjoy the competitiveness of it.

Maybe you loving online play a lot, and lost interest in single player games? Once i started online its been a while since i played any single player game.
This is the type of game im getting hooked on , but there arnt many local servers that i know off

Some servers aren't listed like Quake Live and Heroes of Newerth, but they are easy to find in game.
If your interested in competitive gaming, try Quake Live, expect to get a beating like no other though.
Edit: Forgot, Team Fortress 2 is also a blast.
