True, but I don't think it would be easy to secure a job offer like that unless you're getting transferred within a company you already work for, or unless you are in extremely high demand for some reason

I also considered the 189 visa back then, but the estimates were 12-18 months before it's granted, which is too long for me.

Apparently you can do a 457 (which guarantees work when you land there) and apply for the 189 when you're there. The 189 is granted within 3-6 months if you're already living and working is Aus. The visa fees are also less of an issue, due to the $ being worth more there and the fees won't seem as exhorbitant there.
Ya that's another route, I think the 457 is a temporary work visa, and is apparently the most common way that people get in, and probably way quicker and cheaper, but you need to get a job that will sponsor you (you're guaranteed work because you must find a job to get the visa). You don't get the perks of permanent residence though, and it only lasts for 4 years, so you do have to apply for residence after a couple of years.

I guess. Its more feasible than you think though. If a job like this offers 500k+ salary then a once off expense of 50k visa isn't all that crazy.

Ya, but unless there's a good reason to hire someone from the other side of the world rather than someone that's already there, then why go to the expense or effort? If there's no-one good locally, or if you can really offer something that the locals can't, then for sure it's feasible.

I'll leave it up to you to judge the strength of your own position.

I fundamentally disagree with your line of reasoning though (on a theoretical level). Hiring a 2nd rate employee is much more expensive and more effort in the long run than relocation costs would be. As you say its contingent on skill level - nobody is going to fly in the worlds best cab driver when the local can do an acceptable job at driving the cab around the place but at skill levels beyond that you very quickly get to a point where getting an employee that is 5% better is worth a lot of money.

That being said - you are kinda eyeballing a job market that must be pretty popular with Saffers right now, so that does lessen the chances of paid relocation quite a bit. So your planned course of action is probably the right one despite my theorising above.

My reasoning was more generalized, in that I'm assuming that for most jobs, employers would look local first, and only if they don't find anyone, will they go to the trouble of sourcing someone internationally. So there probably aren't that many sponsored positions available. But that's just my own conjecture.

For me, I'm more interested in immediate permanent residence because when I get there, I want to put my kid in school, and not have to worry about extra medical aid in case we have to see a doctor, and if you are on a temporary work visa, you have to fund all that yourself for a few years until you actually do get permanent residence. The temp visas also come with restrictions on where you can live and work, but with the 189 visa, you can live and work anywhere in Aus.
