I think its good, frankly if you really wanna be here you can think of 10 characters to write. When i was new i thought it was a clever way to get people talking, and to stop people from becoming too lazy. I'd rather have a conversation about a topic than just read, and i think most readers should think this way. Why be scared to post if your new, it doesn't exactly affect your real life Plus i managed to worm my way into conversations like a virus or something

We could maybe have a trial period with no 10 character minimum post rule? Jan ?

Quick question I'd like participants in this discussion to weigh in on:

A like/agree/thanks button will probably make the reputation system redundant.

Should I decide to go for the one click response button rather than get rid of the character limit, what are your thoughts on discontinuing the reputation system?
You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say will be misquoted, then used against you.

As the person with the most rep, I say kill it. I don't think people are using it properly anyway.

My trophies though....

I'm of the opinion that getting rid of the rep system in favor of a "like" system would be beneficial. Rep systems often lead to elitism and there's few things as disparaging as getting down-repped by forum regulars when you're a new member. More and more forums seem to be moving away from pos/neg rep systems and towards systems where you can like someone's post if you agree with it or think it's a good post.

Completely agree. Traffic stats and actual activity is not one and the same thing.

However, I've always been of the opinion that a large part of why new members tend not to stick around is because some of the regulars here tend to stake out their turf in an unfriendly manner whenever new members are involved. Around here it's not uncommon for a new member to be pounced upon by a whole gang of regulars whenever they do something that is wrong or perceived to be wrong. Sometimes it is even something that is taken out of context or a genuine misunderstanding. It's just so unnecessary. No new member is going to stick around after an experience like that. Especially not when regulars quite literally tell them to fuck off.

That said, people tend to strongly disagree with me on this point. Usually they're fast to point out one or two members who stuck around, as if that somehow proves something in the context of how low the user retention rate is compared to how many people actually register here monthly. A slightly more friendly attitude towards newcomers could make a massive difference, in my opinion.

If we do let go of the Reputation system, how will it be impacted by a 'Like' UI button? Will a/the 'Like' button lead up to something and the current Rep system does?

It could tally your likes, like many forums do. I'm of the opinion that tallying likes is unnecessary, but I wouldn't care if it did.

+1, I agree but good people do note that if you post a link of a image, you don't need to use /10 chars.
