But once its in it is fast.
About the same, but performance takes a hit once logged in and doing general working or browsing. YouTube playback is as choppy as basic OS operations.

Sounds like a driver problem then.

I'm sure it is, but all updates are supposedly installed.

I think the hardware is so old that this version of Windows can't detect the appropriate software for it. It feels incompatible.

    This...

This is my issue with my lappie. I upgraded it yesterday to Windows 10, and restarting the machine is a pain. It can take up to 5 to 7 minutes for the bloody thing to log into Windows and takes forever to load. But once it's going, everything is smooth and operating much better than Windows 8.1. It's really strange, and the internet searches I've done has been less than helpful.

Easy. run "netplwiz" from the Run command (win +R), then select not to enter a username and password. It'll ask you for a user/pass that will automatically be logged in.

Will this work even if a domain username and password is required?

Can't make any promises I'm afraid as I don't have experience with auto login on domains...But it wouldn't hurt (or would, if you cant login later hehe) to try DOMAINNAME\Username as user. I think if it DOESN'T work it won't let you save it.

    You can disable it

Right click desktop > display settings > Multi-tasking
