They're both using electromagnets if my physics isn't failing me. You're right though in that the addition of superconductor tech makes it is an improvement.

Err, yes:

Lexus embedded almost 200 meters of magnetic track into the specially constructed skate park to demonstrate the hoverboard.

Anyway, from the vid it does seem like there's a long way to go with this still. I am assuming they used relatively pro skateboarders there and to me it looked like the hoverboard was way too slow or something (they keep falling forward off the board). Kinda looks like they can't push it fast enough....

I suspect that the problem is lateral movement - i.e. yes you can push it fast...but in all directions while a skateboard moves only along one axis. I'd imagine that makes the basic skateboard movement difficult.

Its a cool concept though.
