Games that are off the beaten path

Have you ever played an unusual game? By that I mean a game that sets itself apart from the others by being different in some distinct way. It may be the setting, or unique game mechanics that just set it apart.

For example: Two games that made me think of this thread are

In terms of games I have played:

Papo & Yo was certainly different in terms of it's subject matter but also in terms of the child-like creativity of the game environment

Hammerfight had a unique game mechanic in that you used your mouse to move around your airship to get a blade or hammer spinning below you to attack enemies.
 
I'm going to go with the following, Journey!
It may not be "off the beaten path", but it sets itself apart with meechanics. Even though it's "multiplayer" per se, not a word is ever said between players (or msgs being sent), yet each player instinctively knows what other is doing or wants done.

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons.

Brilliant game mechanics and a pretty good story. Also a beautiful and interesting world.

Certainly. I just skimmed through the video but it's a beautiful looking game with some great animation. I'd say the thing that sets it apart the most is the way the camera zooms in and out, it's very effective.

Already mentioned, but Papo & Yo fits the bill for a much different gaming experience. I really liked it though.

I love these type of games, and I've got quite a few Indies in my gaming lists of various platforms. FEZ, FTL, LIMBO, Bastion, Banished and Skydrift are all games I would also add to this list.

Another game I would see as "off the beaten path" is Euro Truck Simulator. It's really good and relaxing
