SEGA CORPORATION has gone very far astray for the core values it once held.
Firstly, the company abandoned its last hardware platform in its finest hour, due to mounting losses. This we can understand to a degree. Fine, then continue making great games.
Then, the company lost some key people who made the great games in the first place, and that was the downhill trend...
Let's first talk about Sonic.
The two best games, came out, at the same time they were selling the Dreamcast. Sonic Adventure, and its sequel, Sonic Adventure 2, are awesome games, even though the former has one annoying bug with its camera system. After that, the games went downhill, and then they became dumbed-down, aimed at 5 year olds. The lastest game and series, Sonic Boom, is by far the biggest divergence yet, dumbing down the characters and making them look much much older, to somehow appeal to the average 5 year old and put off anyone who grew up with these games and still wish to play them. Back in the day, Sonic was the sort of gaming icon whose games you played as a teen or young adult. Although this is just pure speculation, the demise of the franchise is what made people such as Yuji Naka leave SEGA. I still play all these older games, even today.
Then let's talk about what can be done about SEGA:
I don't know if it is relevant, or even possible for them to get back into the hardware business. Personally I doubt it. That being said however, they, when they really went for it, came up with hardware in consoles that was ahead of its time.
If they are to become relevant again, it all boils down to bringing back the great games... getting back onto the horse, reinstating or re-hiring those employees, listening to the customer, and when that is all done, then focus on Sonic and listen to the die-hard fans and give them what they want. They want a third instalment of Sonic Adventure... they have been asking for it for over a decade... we don't want crap for 5 year olds, we want a quality platformer, complete with all the cuss words as they are in the Japanese audio.
I, as have others, have tried to show this company the error of its ways.
