2 point plugs ! aaargh

Plugs are so last millennium. The best DIY investment I ever made was a cordless drill. No power leads that are to short, no 2-point plugs pulling out and doubles as an electric screw drive. Just make sure to charge the batteries.

More a case of 80 year old house with rather soft walls. You will probably be a bit fragile at that age as well.

Its nice to do easy jobs but when you need to drill holes into something a bit harder a cord drill is still the way to go. House is more than 50 years old and the walls are freaking hard destroyed so many drill bits hitting something inside the brick.
