To Joystick or not to Joystick...

MalicE

Party time! Excellent!
So I'm thinking of getting Elite: Dangerous (still a stupid name) and would like to get a joystick to go with it.

Any suggestions as to which would be good value for money. Good quality without paying an arm and a leg.... or is it better to just stick to the ol'mouse?

I use the following: Mad Catz Cyborg FLY-5

Very useful and versatile, I would love to get a HOTAS system but the cost per use doesn't warrant that. If you have a 360 controller that also does a really good job imo, and I don't see why a DualShock4 can't do this either. I would really use keybaord and mouse.

Logitech Extreme 3D Pro...just do it

I've heard you can make the DS4 work on PC now...

But I was thinking of getting back into War Thunder as well so can use it for that then too. But how do the joystick play/handle compared to a mouse. doesn't it restrict manoeuvring a bit?

Yeah, War Thunder is strange. You don't want to use a joystick with this, for some strange reason it doesn't feel right. Here it's been designed for controller and/or kb mouse.

And yes, DS4 controller works perfectly fine. Plug n Play. I actually use it for Dark Souls. I don't imagine there would be much of a difference between it and 360 controller. Apart from the button mappings that the game might display 360 buttons. As long as you know which is where and just mentally replace them. ie A = X / X = Square

I would highly recommend something like the Thrustmaster HOTAS X as a entry level flightstick.

Next upgrade, X-55!

Arcade is designed around using the mouse/kb for the more casual players. You definitely want a proper stick when playing Realistic/Sim battles.

the thing with the joystick is it needs a lot of desk top space. I haven't found a comfortable position for mine so I alway end up using the xbox360 controller.

My wife mocking me about my ultra nerdyness when it comes out doesn't help either haha

yeah I'm a bit limited in the space aspect as well...

I have something like this, minus the drawer and the slide out section extends all the way across and I find it quite adequate. I have G13 / keyboard / mouse / joystick / steering wheel / screen / speakers / webcam / Xbone controller.

Of course not all of it is set up all the time, just the wheel is connected when needed. Otherwise everything else is connected and accessible at all times.

yeah, I have a bit more width. but you honestly won't use the mouse in Elite. I just use keyboard and joystick.

Maybe get a side table thats at least elbow height and put the stick on that? I think that would work and am all of a sudden wondering why the piss I've never tried it myself:wtf:
Hmmmm....

Mouse and keyboard are wireless so I can get them out of the way
