Default Upgrading the HDD in my PS3 tomorrow.

So I've just ordered the Seagate 2.5" SATA ST9320423AS drive. It's 320GB, 7200 rpm and has a 16mb cache. There are some great reviews on this drive and some bad ones. I suppose it's like that in general with everything. Some people will have nothing bad compliments about something whilst others cannot stop complaining about it.

Either way, I'm going to use this drive to upgrade the drive in my PS3.

I'll let you know how it goes

Upgrading a 360's HDD is a lot more fun and adventurous. :P

I'll upgrade my PS3's drive sooner or later. Currently fighting to keep space available on my 80gb drive.

    The 7200rpm isn't really recommended for a PS3 IIRC.

Adds extra heat, but that was for the PHAT models, not sure about the slim.

Well, my PS3 is the phat model still, and the fan comes on and stays on 3 minutes after I've switched it on, so now I'm giving it a reason to be on The issue with 7200 rpm hdd's in the PS3 (besides heat) was that it showed little improvements over 5400 rpm drives, but this drive also has 16mb cache PLUS the added speed...so I'm hoping this works

Can you use any 2.5" sata drive?

Yup any 2.5" but just to be safe use a 5400rpm, I'd rather take a smaller cache and slower speed over overheating

Good point, is there any formware/software updates required on the drive or is it just PnP?

It is all plug n play, and really easy to install.
I've upgraded 3x PS3s with bigger drives and no problems so far. 2 phats and one slim (well, the one phat got the slim's old 250Gb drive)
    .. but I used 5400rpm drives
