He needs to find out of the PS3 supports a 1TB drive first. It would be silly to stick in a massive HDD into a PS3 only to find that the PS3 doesn't recognize it. Anyways, I did my upgrade last night. It took about 2 hours to do. The backup on my PS3 was about 24GB in size. It seemed to back everything. Downloaded games, save games, the lot. So my PS3 now has 300GB free space on it and it does seem to load a bit faster too
My ignore list: growing too fast to keep updating.

Silly question but what do u guys put on your ps3 hard drive? just music/movies etc?
Im sure it depends on the person but i wouldnt copy a movie or series from my pc just to watch it once. Plus thats what media streaming is for
    maybe im missing the point

Demos and Trailers. Most trailers are available in 1080p format and can be up to 800mb per file. Game installs are about 3gb on average.

Well, my little brother had a 40Gb HDD and it was full from demos and game installs so I upgraded it to 200Gb for him so he never have to uninstall anything again - those game installs, demos and PSN downloads can add up... sooner than later depending on how much space you got

Movies/eps I watch either through the PS3 or HTPC, depending on where I watch (bedroom/living room) - the PS3 just streams from the HTPC, so I will prolly never put movies and such on the PS3s HDD.
