What do you get if you take the 1st person puzzle platforming from Portal, switch out the portals for magnetism and mix in a dollop of Lovecraftian horror?

Magrunner: Dark Pulse answers this question with quite a decent and at times challenging game. There is much the same as Portal in this game and a direct comparison would definitely not be in Magrunner's favour (the humour, characters and intuitiveness of the puzzles put Portal ahead) but that's not to say that this isn't a decent game.

The environments look good, there are moments of suspense and the puzzles are varied and interesting. You solve the puzzles with your magnet gun, magnetising platforms and objects in order to manipulate them into place so that you can reach the exit. For the sake of simplicity the magnetism isn't realistic in that green attracts green and red attracts red, rather than opposites attracting each other. I agree with their decision to break from reality for the sake of the game as it makes it easier to remember (and with the later puzzles you'll appreciate the simplicity).

The story isn't half-bad and it got me sticking in to the end. I did refer to a walkthrough a few times: 1) because I'm impatient and 2) because the "mechanics" of the game aren't always so clear.

Ultimately, it's not a bad non-AAA title and worth checking out if you enjoy games like Portal.
