Sony has done a lot to assure us that they're investing a lot into PlayStation VR, perhaps cushioning the blow for the investment required to use it

I wonder if they can use the box for non VR games also, to "up" the performance a bit?

That processing unit is coming with the retail version of Sony's vr it will be mandatory.
