I started with VII and I haven't looked back since. Played 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 10-2, 12 and 13 so far. all on PS. 13 special edition I got for R792.00 all inclusive from www.zaps.co.za
It is not a traditional Final Fantasy in my book. I feel they have moved away from certain elements to try to appeal to a larger market, which can alienate the 'hardcore' Final Fantasy fan. Yet I am still enjoying it, got about 50hrs so for into it so far. The Paradigm system feels pretty shallow, all you basically do is set them up (easy enough), then change them when needed and, mash the X button endlessly FTW.
*Update:
Finished the story, was okay but nothing amazing. Time now to hit up the missions I have missed (the bulk), since supposedly some are more challenging than the core game. Overall this game is not a great successor to the Final Fantasy brand when say comparing it past iterations. I even felt the previous 'mixed reactions' Final Fantasy, FFXII, held its own much better.
So far the best JRPG this generation is still - Tales of Vesperia. If you are a fan of the genre and have not yet played it, do yourself a favour.
