Default Hideo Kojima Spills (Some) Beans On His New, Upcoming Game

Hideo Kojima is now working on his own title, independently, after his well publicized split with Japanese publisher Konami. What this new game is remains unknown- after all, considering that Kojima takes, on average, 3-4 years to develop a game, we are probably a long way out from seeing much of it.

However, in an interview with Polygon, Kojima decided to talk about the new game a bit, letting us in on what the game is, what new technologies it will (or won’t) use, and why he chose to collaborate with Sony.

“I was thinking in my first year out I would make something indie, something small, maybe a game or a movie,” Kojima said. “But after talking with friends, acquaintances and seeing what fans were saying, I was convinced I should work on a big game, so that possibility was gone.” He added that the new game will not be a VR game.

But why choose, Sony, then? After all, Kojima probably had the entire industry bidding for him- why would he limit himself to one platform only?

“I was fortunate to have offers from many people, studios and publishers from all over the world, but I’ve known Sony for quite a long time now. They respect what I do, respect me. It was just a matter of trust.”

That’s as fair a reason as any- and after how the Konami split went down, one can hardly blame Kojima for wanting some stability and trust in his working relationships now.

Konami can't claim copyright on monsters and ghost towns. They simply need to change the name and any elements that could link it back to Silent Hill. Considering Kojima met up with Norman Reedus again this week, I'm hopeful they're doing exactly that.

Sorry I misread your first post as "Please let it be renamed to Silent Hills!"

Either way Kojima said he would like to work with Del Toro and Reedus in the future, but it won't be on his current project.

No worries, it's still early morning .

But yeah, I think Kojima and Sony are very aware of the hype that they're was for Silent Hills before it was cancelled so I'd be very surprised if game turns out to be something else. Only thing I hope is that we don't have to wait 5 years to find out.

That's not entirely true, unfortunately. Depending on the type of contract Kojima had at Konami, he might not be allowed to make something that is similar to projects he was working on for Konami. At least not until a certain arbitrary date has passed.

Also, considering the power Konami has in terms of lawyers (that pachinko money provides the best), and their apparent ties to the Yakuza, I wouldn't take the risk.

I have a feeling that his new game will have something to do with Mechs. The new logo for his studio looks like one.

Guess we'll see. I'll be really surprised if he doesn't cash in on the hype for a survival horror title from him.
