I am atheist but have seen first hand how the placebo of theism has done good for for the individual as well as the community.

Not counting extremism of course but that is a human flaw.

I don't think that this thread should be derailed as it is a great topic so this is the last I'll discuss that here.

Not at all, it's quite inspiring. Let's just keep it civil...

...like Mr Fake Grass here is doing at the moment. I applaud you, sir, for your openmindedness regarding theism and religious belief. Good to see MyBB and PD hasn't eradicated all empathy from you heart.

Myself, I subscribe to the same belief system as most in this thread has already admitted to. This past year I've tried to keep up hope, but quite often I have felt all hope is lost and I don't see any way out anymore. I've tried to console myself in my religious beliefs, but due to my removal of church and all related activities, I've found it difficult to "keep uo the faith".

I've been through an extremely rough 18 months, with nigh-on financial ruine, loss of a family member and pet (both due to unnatural causes), extreme mental and emotional abuse from client and high levels of stress attributed to managing an 11-strong company.

Today I joined my wife to church for the first time in 9 months. I'll be honest and say it felt good. We received a message of, guess what, HOPE for the dire straits our country is going through and the lessons we learned can easily be applied by people from all walks of life.

The most important topic was being an agent of CHANGE. Months ago I motivated my team at work to "be the change", so this was pretty much in line with my own point of view. If we want to see positive change, we have to be the catalysts thereof. If we want to see hope for a better future transpire in our families, friends, communities and country we have to start with ourselves.

So, in a nutshell: my personal beliefs, my wife and close friends are what give me hope. If I can see the positive effect those have on me, I believe there might just be hope for human kind.

Whenever I hear this, well there's always a rebuttal I'd like to give, but it seems too offensive and definitely doesn't fit with the theme of this thread.

    ----------------------

In general though, I don't understand why you need hope. There's no war going on here, there isn't a massive conflict that's currently displacing people or anything like that. The media reports about the worst because that's what gets the views. The good news doesn't. Most people don't care about the petty racist rubbish that's being reported daily. They want to go to work, put food on the table, and look after their loved ones (wife, children, pets whatever). Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs and all that. You don't need hope to do that.

So yeah... I still don't understand the purpose of this thread. Perhaps if should be re-named: "What makes you happy?" Then we could get some positive responses, instead of the quite depressing ones that are in here.

I live in the hope that a large meteorite will hit the earth soon and kill everyone.

Don't worry, we don't need a meteorite. We seem to be doing a good job of that ourselves.

I don't need an external source of "hope". For me its kinda an internalised assumption I guess. A little like this House quote:

Cuddy: "How is it that you always assume you're right?
House: "I don't, I just find it hard to operate on the opposite assumption.

I guess what gives me hope is different from everyone else's. I live in the hope that I will eventually work for myself while still earning a good salary. I've been working towards it slowly but surely. It's my dream and it's what gives me hope.

That situation was forced a bit on me, except the still earning a good salary bit. I also have a dream of building an uber automation / integration solution and I'm starting on it in April. Right now I'm building a fairly small system for a very lucrative market that will provide some nice passive income. From just 2 clients we can double our income and (technically) not be dependent on placing resources at clients anymore.

...maybe then you'll think of joining the team.
