    Cordless Desktop® MX™ 5500 Revolution

Purchased it for my friend, he likes it lots, although oddly enough rarely the mouse stops working for like a few seconds
and the keyboard has problems displaying the media on it's little lcd screen

But overall a good buy I think

I'd stick to Logitech... not sure exactly which one but budget plays a big role in that. But Logitech are a very good bet.

i would not go with wireless mice and keyboards... they eat batteries like crazy and they lose signal easily.

Ideally you want to go wired. Wireless has improved a lot and is fairly reliable now days, but just when you don't want it to, it will act up. In both cases of wired/wireless, go Logitech.

Razer Mamba or Microsoft X8 - They are both gaming grade gaming mice
Keybaords are tricky though, best to stick with Wired if its for gaming

I have a Microsoft Wireless Desktop 5000 - works well, but not for gaming.

For some reason it appears there is some input lag created when the mouse is working and keys are pressed on the keyboard. Very annoying.

I believe I shall be getting myself a new set Wired this time....

Wireless and gaming aren't the best combination around. As Xero says, get a wireless mouse, but a wired keyboard.
