Default Microsoft Wants PS4 and Xbox One to Connect Online (Huge news!!)

Microsoft has announced it will natively support cross-platform play between Xbox One, Windows 10, and other "online multiplayer networks." The move effectively opens the Xbox Live platform so that can interact with Sony's PlayStation Network, among others.

The announcement was made in a post on Xbox.com, in which Chris Charla, director of [email protected], said "it’s up to game developers to support this feature" and noted that players will "always have the option of choosing to play only with other Xbox Live players."

"In addition to natively supporting cross-platform play between Xbox One and Windows 10 games that use Xbox Live, we’re enabling developers to support cross-network play as well," Charla explained.

"This means players on Xbox One and Windows 10 using Xbox Live will be able to play with players on different online multiplayer networks – including other console and PC networks."

The first game to support the functionality is Psyonix's Rocket League, which will allow Xbox One and PC players to matchmake against each other. Microsoft extended "an open invitation for other networks to participate as well."

Would be great, loads of times my coleage at work (Console players) and I would love to co-op on games like Dragon Age or Far cry and we cant.

Hope this open the way for developers to cater for people like me. Yes I know vs gonna be a whole new head ache but at least give us Co-op so long.

Interesting indeed, but will Microsoft really delve into developing games for PS4 that uses Xbox Live feature? From the sounds of it this would be a requirement in order to play across platforms.

Due to being multiplayer only, it would probably only be multiplayer games that makes use of dedicated servers and not client side peer 2 peer such custom lobbies, the likes of which we see in Call of Duty. While it may in the future allow it but for now it seems that the former is more realistic.

Some of the best gaming news I've read in a long time. Hopefully they can pull it off.

I know they've had their fair share of critics, but the direction Microsoft is moving to is an amazing one for gamers. They are really trying hard to get into bed with PC gamers, which they have neglected for many years now. And what they are doing will be amazing if they can pull it off.

There are so many games that there is no reason not to have cross platform, like Rocket League as an example. I see no reason why PC, Xbone and PS4 players can't play against and with each other. And what a great thing that would be. Good luck to Microsoft for trying this, and I hope they can make it a success

    Completely agree with this.

This could be huge for a number of genres. Racing, Fighting, Sport and co-op games. The only place I don't see it working will be competitive 3rd and 1st person shooters.

Let's not forget that the only reason this couldn't happen before is because Microsoft actively refused to allow it in the first place.

    Example
    Example 2

It's good that they're finally waking up though.
