    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screen_tearing is a pretty accurate description with a picture to the right.

    Its difficult to actually capture the effect in a still image, because in motion, the tear often moves rapidly and can jitter up and down the screen or cause a headache inducing flickering.

    Its found most commonly in 3D rendered games as graphics cards without vsync enabled will always output as many frames as they can render. Most screens have a refresh rate of 60hz, 100hz or 120hz, but modern graphics cards will push out frame rates well above that in scenes not straining them, this will result in screen tearing.
