I am not bothered much by achievements, although I usually browse the achievement list for interesting thing to do in the game like in the saboteur jumping off the eiffel tower and not dying looked interesting and I achieved it.

I do think they should rework the system to give a you gamer score divided by the number of games played so you can tell the difference between those who just play a lot of games and accumulate score and those who play a game until every achievement is unlocked. It would mean a lot more then even though I will probably fall into the former category.

Achievements are awesome to keep you playing a game.

However, and I'm talking from my WoW experience here (Which is a PC game for the Xbox folk around that don't know. ), they are also the biggest waste of time ever. I mean, how does it help me that I killed x amount of y in z time? That I spent 50 hours running around looking for a chicken just to wait another 70 to have it drop the egg that I need (Might be slightly exaggerated...)? How does that help me in any way? Except to be able to compare my e-p....
To play a game and do things over and over again just to get achievements such as the 1,000,000,000 Gold achievement of Fable 2 (Or whichever amount it was) is...a waste of time.

If they're fun things to do though, such as exploring or going through before unseen content, then I reckon it's worth it.

I think achievements span the range from "awesome" to "totally absurd" (I'm looking at YOU Valve for that damn gnome-achievement! which I eventually got... ), but like most other people on here, I'm totally hooked! Games seem to have more value and you spend a lot more time on the game, which makes spending R600+ on a game more worth it.

Also, it guides you into discovering / doing things you might otherwise have never done in the game...

They're there and if I unlock a few a long the way, that's cool. I've never replayed a title to unlock achievements though, if I unlock a lot its more because the game itself had good replay value or great multiplayer.

Points. I love my achievmetns. The only problem I have with them is the online one's. I mean you can get all the single player ones but never the online one's just because our lovely country doesnt have decent connectivity rates, and thus it stops you from getting 100% achievment on that game.

I suppose in most cases it boils down to whether or not you buy originals or make copies.
I mean let's face it, the more you pay the more u tend to respect and play a game else why buy it. !(PS3 Ownerz know this)!
But for me be it R600 or 60 bucks It doesn't matter.

For those of you who say they don't see the point of going thru all that trouble for nothing but (made up digital points) think about this.....
... Why do we do anything, I mean even playing a game in the first place ???
Answer = For the IMATERIAL reward of knowing your SKILL LEVEL and how good a Gamer you really are.
I mean theres a major difference between telling someone how you painstakingly cleard "GEARS OF WAR2" on INSANE
and having an Achievement to F@*!ing prove it.

It is a mixed bag for me. All depends on the game.

Honestly I have seldom found myself going out of my way to get achievements. Often I have too large a backlog of games to play to bother with them too much. Over time however I have grown to think it is a decent idea for those who enjoy collecting the points / trophies, but sometimes the e-peen waggling can get annoying from some people I have encountered.
