Pepper / Mace spray (Stream/Jet vs Fog/mist)

Hey guys.

I know most of you are butch af and can single-handedly take down waves of thugs, but I've bought them for a while now, for both my wife and I. At the shop I had a discussion (happens every time) about the Stream/Jet vs Fog/mist type.

My personal preference is to get the fog or misting type that sprays like deodorant, rather than the one that sprays a jet or stream like a child's water pistol. My thinking is, when you are attacked or in danger, you wont have the clarity of mind to properly aim the stream, mostly likely you will miss in the panic.
But, with the misting type, you are bound to get some contact. Sure, you might get some of it onto you, but most will go away from you and give you an opportunity to get away.

Distance, the stream type does have the distance advantage, but the fog type doesnt exactly spray only 3cm's. They can spray a pretty good distance and with that, comes a better area of effect.

Another thing, some of the stream types have this safety feature where you have to twist the nozzles about 45degrees to fire, where the fog type you slip your finger beneath a safety paddle.

I'd just like to get some thoughts on what you guys think.

Definitely fog.

If a woman is threatened by (uhm presumably) male person you can bet he'll be in her face so range is not an issue. Second...adrenalin & fear makes hands shake and reduces ability to aim so jet bad.

And finally you're not trying to kill the guy with a straight hit...just want to make him think about his life choices for 5 seconds.

I'd just like to get some thoughts on what you guys think.

1. Buy 2 more cans - and make sure you waste a full can each in your backyard. Cost near nothing and will improve confidence (esp for her). I've seen women armed with loaded guns (their hubby insisted) but they don't know which side is the front. Thats a complete SHTSTORM because it just adds an extra element of uncertainty to a dangerous situation (bad situation + doesn't know how her "weapon will perform"). Honestly...better to go unarmed than uncertain.

2. Its absolutely crucial that she understands there is a strategic element to this as well. She can't just blindly pull the pepper spray when threatened. A good example is the people getting paintball guns with pepper bullets as self defence. Not a bad idea but there is a risk of things going like this:

Havoc feeling threatened > Pull pintball guns and fires wildly > (now angry) Tsotsis pull real gun > Havoc dead

Its much the same with pepper spray - she needs to employ it when she knows it'll give her an edge rather than ESCALATE the situation further. So she need to be very clear that this buys her 5 seconds max...and she needs to see it as such...a tool that buys her a 5 second head start in the sprint to safety/crowds.
