Default Star Wars Battlefront Had Its Campaign Cut to Release In Time for The Force Awakens

Star Wars Battlefront's lack of a campaign was a "conscious decision" to get the game out in time for the release of Star Wars: The Force Awakens.

During EA's Investor Day briefing, EA Studios boss, Patrick Söderlund addressed the much-criticised omission:

"The one thing that we got criticized for was the lack of a single-player campaign", he said. "It was a conscious decision we made due to time and being able to launch the game side-by-side with the movie that came out to get the strongest possible impact."

After the game's original announcement, DICE general manager, Patrick Bach told IGN that "the game is first and foremost a multiplayer game. Battlefront was a multiplayer game. That’s the game we wanted to create — to recreate the battles of the Original Trilogy."

Söderlund made clear that the company had learned from the experience, seeming to indicate that next year's new Battlefront would include a more fully-fledged single-player mode:

"Star Wars Battlefront came out [but] we got criticised for the depth and breadth of it. So as we look at why that was, we have to go back and course-correct that for another version if we were ever to build one."

With much of the critical reception also focusing on Battlefront's perceived lack of depth, it garnered a 75 score average on review aggregator, Metacritic, indicating "mixed or average reviews" by that site's metric. It's something that Söderlund is clearly keen to improve upon in future games:

"I think the team created a really good game based on the premise that we had. I would say the game has done very well for us and reached a very different demographic than a traditional EA game. So from that perspective, it's a success. Are we happy with the 75 rating? No. Is that something we're going to cure going forward? Absolutely."

I bought it during the May 4th promotion and I'm actually enjoying it quite a lot. It gulped up 9 hours of my life without me even noticing!

    Yip... It will do that...

I was quite disappointed in the lack of campaign, but what bothers me now is how they can talk about it, and admit it was a failure, but still not implement it as a DLC at some stage? But if they releasing a new game in the next sort of 6 month to a year, why on earth would they put that much effort into making their customers happy...

I bought it knowing in full it was a multiplayer only game, with some singleplayer maps to fool around on. So I wasn't disappointed in the least.
