    Default Gaming Turn-offs

So you see there's a new game coming out and it catches your eye. It's pretty good-looking, it looks fun. You think you want this game so you get to know it a bit better. A glance at a review here, a peek at a trailer there, maybe even a bit of actual gameplay footage if you're lucky... But then, you find out it has one of those annoying qualities you cannot stand. You're sad because this is one hot game, but it just wouldn't work out. You can't seem to look past that glaring flaw...

So what are your biggest gaming turn-offs, what feature or quality in a game will put you right off buying it even though it looked interesting? Or maybe you're not completely deterred, but it's something that makes the game less than perfect.

For me it's when I read a review or write-up about a game and in it the dreaded word "grinding" pops up. When someone says a game gets "grindy" it definitely puts me off a game I was interested in. Sometimes I'll get it and hope that the grinding isn't too bad but in general it's something that will put me off getting a game. I play games to be entertained, not to slavishly grind away for promises of progress.

For MPs...mouse controls that feel sluggish/delayed/smoothed. Completely ruins the experience for me if it doesn't shoot where I want it.

I miss the razor sharp direct connection that the games of old had (and some better new ones).

    Good...CoD4, CSGO, Overwatch, UT
    Crap...All CoDs after 4, BF3 and later

And yeah thats with everything turn off/low/tweaked on good hardware.

There was a short window in between (e.g. BFBC2 where it was sluggish but you could fix it with some good tweaking)...the ones after that no joy.

I mostly play CSGO and GTAV these days, and I notice that the more a game has some mechanic which even closely resembles pay to win - even if it's pay to have a slight advantage -that throws warning signs. In EVE, if you have cash, you can train multiple characters or get lots of in game cash, in World of Tanks you can purchase a premium account to grind() faster.

I understand the point that some people have time and others have money thus it is fair, but then there are the kids who have time and parents that have money, so they roflstomp all in their path and giggle at the peasants.

I see that it's made by EA.....

Day 1 DLC....that REALLY bugs me. Speaking of which, a day 1 patch too...frikking annoying. Or REALLY blatant bugs on day 1. Time and time again the community has shown that they really are accepting of games that hold out on releasing to fix issues (IF THOSE ISSUES ARE FIXED, I'm looking at your Arkham Knight) over games that keep their deadline but release buggy games.

If the game turns out to have, a horrible plot, or lack thereof.
As well as cut-scenes that can't be paused or skipped.

    I don't mind 'grinding'.

For me the biggest turn-off is when you have to make use of checkpoints for the game to save and the checkpoints are too far apart. Sometimes you only get a short while to play and the checkpoint system really screws with that.

Camera controls that can't be inverted! It's rare to not get the option but if it's not there then I can't play it.

No FOV settings in first person games on the PC. If the FOV is too narrow then it makes me feel ill.

    • Azure or US/UK based servers.
    • Zombie games. Same with Borderlands, I liked the first, but the 2nd wore me down after 20+ hours of just hosing down enemy wave after wave.
    • Bullet sponge enemies.
    • Simplification of a game, I am a tad worried about Battelfield 1 with this regard. Quake 4, taking away rocket jumping and other features in the quake franchise since forever.
    • Agree on grinding, not my thing, whether in SP or MP, I gotta enjou what I do, must not feel like a chore.
    • Region locked.

Yup, sometimes its not available in Demos/betas and you have to manually change a config file.
