Are we being overcharged for Nvidia and AMD graphics cards in South Africa?

lol the comment section is so funny...
People have absolutely no idea and I mean they know NOTHING unless they work directly with pricing at suppliers.
Like the clown claiming he knows that SA suppliers/retailers add a 40% mark up...LOL thanx for the laugh.

I wish people would just realize that SA generally doesn't pay the same as North America. Which is the biggest PC hardware market on earth.
A good example of this is the RX480, which is launching for $199-$229...In North America...Our suppliers are paying roughly $260-$300.

Save your breath...they're not taking into account customs duty which can be anywhere from 0%-20% depending if the importer uses the correct codes (for most computer components is 0% btw) and if the country of origin (even though nVidia and AMD are US companies their kit will ship from somewhere in the far east), etc etc etc...

Tinfoil hat brigade. All the retailers got together at their secret retailer lodge and agreed to overcharge the public by as much as they can get away with. Then they ate cookies and drank the blood of virgins which is surprisingly easy to find when you're in the IT industry.

Fact is that a retailer will sell a product for as cheap as they can while still making the books balance at the end of the month because selling 100 products @ R1 profit is better than selling 1 product @ R50 profit. And if you're cheaper than your competitors, you'll get more customers. Business 101.

Ja, the comments really aren't well thought out.

The competition comment in the articles especially. There's no way that a 40% markup is possible in a market as saturated as the local PC hardware market.

Well we are being over charged for most things I think.
Just yesterday I wanted to buy some new filters for one of my cameras from Amazon. Cost of the filters R150 (amaze bargain) total amount after shipping and import duties R1500.00

crrrrrrazy

and thats what you get for living on the bottom of the planet.

This! So much this. but no, every single one of the retailers are in cahoots together, a massive price-fixing oligopoly that goes against the very nature of a free market. All it would take is one savvy person to decide they should get into the market, undercut all these guys and just make MASSIVE profits, as everyone would obviously buy from him as he'd be way cheaper....oh wait, that won't happen because the local margins ARE razer-thin.

IQ of the comment section seems to be mostly single digits.

Wait waht? So they just made R 6 800 on a 1080 HoF that I just bought??? Die Skelms!!!

Two sides of the debate - those who think the markup is 40% and those who think that a retailer is happy making R1 profit a unit. Trust me, they are not poor guys sitting making R1 a damn unit. Neither are they making 40% but in all the stupidity, the article get's the nod and the public go on believing that they're not paying too much for gfx cards ........ Oh and using different currencies to make the price seem more reasonable is dumb, like those who sit in London and moan about how many rands this and that is.

ok I'm going to put this to bed now once and for all.

I'm not mentioning brands but here goes.

Card gets bought from supplier at 8099 exc vat. Card is priced at R9500 on retailers site.
You can do the math, work it out and tell me how retailers are making huge margins on the card.

I wish people actually knew what they were talking about before spewing shit.

SA almost never hits their sales targets for graphics cards and we're talking seriously small targets. That should give you an indication of how small the market actually is. We can't expect to pay the same as North America.

R1 and R100 were examples. It makes the math easier to convey the point I was trying to make.
