Heavenly Sword Developer: PS3 Is Not Powerful Enough For 3D Gaming

Sony is currently working on the upcoming Playstation 3 firmware which will enable stereoscopic 3D gaming and Blu-Ray movie playback. Tameem Antoniades, co-founder of Heavenly Sword developer Ninja Theory, believes that lack of processing power will limit the console's 3D possibilities severely.

"The problem is that to do 3D properly you need to render 60 frames per second, per eye. And at least a 720p resolution [per eye]," he noted. "So in essence that's 1080p rendering at 120 frames per second, and the current generation can only process very rudimentary graphics at that spec."

But that doesn't mean that stereoscopic 3D gaming is impossible. "I think the technology's limited now, so you won't be able to play stuff that looks like Avatar -- the movie -- in 3D," Antoniades explained. "Every generation has to be at least five-to-ten times more powerful than the last, so I think we'll get there in the next generation. I think that will be totally revolutionary for games."

Sony plans to enable stereoscopic 3D through a firmware update this and promises to release patches for Killzone 2, LittleBigPlanet, Gran Turismo 5 and other unspecified games that will make them playable in stereoscopic 3D on compatible TVs.

Err... no. Cinema footage is only playing at 24fps (x 2 for 3D obviously). Why would you need 60fps in games?

I'm getting tired of Ninja Theory trolling on the PS3. When they actually bring out a stellar game, I'll start taking their opinions more seriously.

You misunderstood. I'm not arguing that 60FPS isn't great/awesome. I'm saying it's not a necessity. If you've got a game at a locked framerate of 30fps then there's not problem. As long as it's a solid 30fps and not a variable framerate.

Dante's Inferno doesn't even come close to God Of War III visually. And GOW3 doesn't even run at 60FPS.

Knight also believes that smoother motion helps improve the quality of the graphics:
No ... it improves the potential quality of the animation. It's not going to make the game look better visually.

i see. so it's more then an issue of constant vs variable fps. dante was just one i remember that was thumping on the whole 60fps thing that is why i mentioned/linked it.

Cinema and tv are two diferent platforms, in america they use 30 fps on their tv as apposed to our 25fps as apposed to cinema 24FPS, they are always backwards.

I still do believe that he has it wrong, as far as I'm aware its just 30 FPS per eye and not 60 as he suggest.

    Edit : typo - meant 24fps not 34 fps

True, but I stated that Cinema is 24fps (as this is the only media available that currently "does" 3D, in the stereoscopic sense). Tv is a totally different story as NTSC and PAL standards come into play.

You can have a perfectly smooth gaming experience as long as the framerate is solid. So a locked 30fps should be fine.

    LMAO Get this:

He states : "The problem is that to do 3D properly you need to render 60 frames per second, per eye. And at least a 720p resolution [per eye]," he noted. "So in essence that's 1080p rendering at 120 frames per second,

    Uhm...no genius. It's not 1080p at 120FPS....it's 720p @ 120FPS - like you said 5 words ago. What a moron. It's like he's saying 1 + 1 equals 2, so that's like 4!

Someone with this level of comprehension of his OWN WORDS should not be taken seriously. I also don't take comments from developers of games which are shorter than MW2's single player campaign.
