Showmax is objectively better than Netflix at the moment. However, I think that's gonna change in a year or two. The biggest reason Showmax is that big is that DSTV has had the monopoly on most Hollywood licenses for the past two decades in SA; now that Netflix entered the market, as soon as the license expires (which is normally for about 3 years or so), then the playing fields should be leveled. Add that to the fact that Netflix original shows seem to be much better than the average series, and that Netflix got the exclulsive distribution rights for Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks about a month ago, the game is gonna change very quickly.

Yet they don't have an Xbox or PlayStation app?

Unfortunately not, it seems, but the fact that they have desktop, mobile and DSTV decoder apps probably outweighs that. I know of very few people who would prefer using their consoles to stream over, say, a media center PC, Chromecast, DSTV decoder or just a Smart TV. Not that it's not a great way to do it, I just think that the audience is markedly smaller than on other devices. And weighing that up against the difference in content at the moment makes it an easy choice.
