The button mashing to open crates or gates, i don't mind. Also, collecting a million things and running back and forth isn't that bad IMO. Almost feels to me like if an MMO/RPG doesn't have that "feature" in the game it's missing the basics.
But when it comes to games where i have to defend someone or something from hordes of enemies while they take their sweet ass time, i want to cry![]()
I just hate rhythm combo things.
Look at a screen and mash triangle triangle square square as it comes onto the screen. Completely takes you out of the moment.
One minute you are killing a monster, the next you are playing simon.
Bad game mechanics is one thing, but I like things to be semi-realistic. I like the idea of mashing a button to open stuff especially if it is matching to say your character's strength.
Role playing games should just be it - you play the role of a character and I like to become the character almost - in manner and personality and if I am a bard - please, I would not want to be able to pick up that massive sword. If I played a wizard - the same thing.
I absolutely despise games where the reality in a role playing game is equal to that of Power Rangers or you kill 2000 orcs with one sweep from your magic light saber - just not true to 'realistic' role playing. The kind where - if you have better equipment, you automatically win the fight bs. So everybody runs around with the same purple armor. Or the game where you can level up to lvl99 within 24 hours where all it is about the highest level character and the prestige.
It should be about the game, the story, the experience, forming the unique personality of the character, being able to live yourself in this epic adventure. As soon as it is a competition of who is the best - the story is lost, the adventure lost its value.
Do not get me wrong - PvP is most excellent. Love it - nothing like outwitting another player. Not just with brawn. I played a halfling thief on one of NWN first persistent servers. I started with nothing and couldn't take killing in the sewers for little coin and XP. I wanted to go out to the dungeons and hunt for treasure! So I played my role - I was a thief and hence I started pick pocketing low level characters and made my coin like that - even stole some magic items.
I learned hiding skills and setting traps. Bought some traps and head out to where the big boys play. Just outside the gate there is a small wooden house with a healer inside - so everybody low on health from a hectic battle in the woods would run to the house and pay for some healing. So I thought - they are low on health, it is a PvP area and I need XP. So I planted traps in front of the entrance of the small house where the healer is. The traps I set is undetectable since a thief with enough skill in setting traps would be undetectable to all except other thieves skilled in spotting traps.
So they set off the trap while I am safely back in a non PvP area and collect my XP. Stealthily go back and lay some more traps. Everybody complained and I did steal some hectic stuff from some players that I sold for massive amounts and really upgraded my character.
Point is - I played my role and killed fighters on lvl 20 when I was just on lvl 9 and that is the point. Oh, the fun and laughter of it all. Player yelling at the poor DM, standing naked after I stole his magic armor of his body and sneaked away. Today there is more strict rules when it comes to being a thieve.
That does not stop me from being a ranger and play his role. I adore games that gives you the opportunity to do so.
One thing I find frustrating is when I have to follow an NPC who is walking at a snail's pace, forcing me to sprint in circles around them as they move![]()
When you get captured 3/4 through the game in a cut-scene and wake up in a cell only to find you have been stripped of all your guns, armour and ammo. I DID NOT PLAYED THIS FAR ONLY TO START FROM SCRATCH, DAMNIT! At least the previous occupant left me a crowbar...
So cliche I want to spell it with a K.
One day, I'll grow up and become responsible.
Probably not today.
Oh yeah, and underwater levels. I hate underwater levels.
