We've got a poll going here (The History of WASD)where you can put down what config you use to game. It's sitting at about 90% WASD

I remember what a paradigm shift it was for me and some of my friends to get used to wasd.

Why use letters when you have perfectly good arrow keys or numb lock keys?

But yea, a game or 2 of Quake and all good

Yeah, I fought against it for the longest time.. in Doom, Hexen, Heretic and the other older fps, I used my right hand on the arrows, and r-Crtl to fire, left hand on Space and L-Alt for strafing. It worked a treat, and then I added Pg-Up and Pg-Dn to look up and down in some of the more advanced games like Duke3D and RoTT.

    Feels old, man.

    Nope.

I'm left-handed, so I remap keyboard controls to use the arrow keys next to the right Control key.

    You lucky bastard

I think it's time they re design the keyboard keeping the mouse in mind...

Man I remember my first mouselook game being Gunman Chronicles. Got most of the way through it before I realised that you could use the mouse to play. Up until then I had to use pg-up and pg-down to look up and down. It was infuriatingly difficult.

Haha so true. I remember eventually thinking to myself way back then, why didn't they make ESDF the default instead to more optimally use the key to finger position ratio becuase WASD is actually a cramped up position anyways

I thought it had to do with the fact that you couldnt always move forward and right/left while crouch shooting at the same time, or something like that. i seem to recall arrow keys not allowing too much simultaneous button-presses, whereas the wasd allowed it more.
