Without a doubt, the game that has meant the most to me and have influenced me the most, is Quake 1. Its extremely hard to believe its turning 20....20 freaking years!! HTF is that possible? I mean, so I've been playing Quake 1 for 20 years? Well, here's to the next 20 years!

    and it all started here:

Here's a little piece of history from John Romero himself.

One of best engines developed for Quake 1 is called Darkplaces, its focus is on better textures and lighting:

Good old memories. We had a buddy that totally sucked at Doom 2 DM, which we used to LAN every weekend. So one weekend he convinced us to try this new game, developed by ID. He totally obliterated us that weekend as none of us could get used the new mouse look "gimmick".

    Cool

I meant to post this earlier....

MachineGames (guys who brought us the last Wolfenstein games) have released a Quake 1 Expansion or Episode. Calling it a DLC will make me very unhappy.

One of my favourite games of all time. Was so amazed that my PC could give me such a wonderful experience. Loved Q1-3.

Funny story, do you remember the Quake screen saver or theme? It had that soft Quake sounds playing. The one night I left my PC on and my aunt and uncle and came visiting and stayed over. My aunt had slept in my room and slept on the floor in the lounge. The screen automatically turned off because of power saving but the sounds still continued to played. The power saving timer was quicker than the screen saver. So when she went to sleep there was no noise but later the screen saver kicked in and I just remember her opening the door and running out and screaming LOL.

Maybe i should've highlighted this in time for the anniversary, however i just thought i'd let you guys know that i set up a few Quake 1 (QuakeWorld) servers in Johannesburg a couple months ago:

    za.refragged.com:27500 - Free for all
    za.refragged.com:28501 - Allround1 (1on1, 2on2, 4on4 etc...)
    za.refragged.com:28502 - Allround2
    za.refragged.com:28503 - Allround3
    za.refragged.com:28504 - Allround4

You can get the game on www.nquake.com which is an installer based on the Shareware version. I guess PCGamer explained it pretty well.

One good thing is the game is so lightweight it runs on pretty much anything while still having that hardore gameplay.
