How to buy an Oculus Rift from South Africa: what it will cost

The Oculus Rift does not ship to South Africa, but that doesn’t have to stop you from getting one.

I'm waiting for the OSVR rather.

I've applied for a dev kit. It does't officially ship to South Africa but as a developer I'm hoping I can get one.

Failing that, I will use this shipping method to either get that or go for the Rift.

yeah the OSVR is looking a lot more configurable and adaptable to suit your requirements.

    R12k.. pffft

I'll maybe consider VR when the total works out at R6k

Also big ups to Jan. He told me about this method over the weekend, I asked him if he can do an article and bam, here's a detailed article. That's great stuff.

I'm torn between this and the HTC Vive (which you can also probably buy with the same method).

    Man Raw Data looks cool.

The problem is I don't have an empty lounge to set the Vive up in.

I saw a post on Carbonite, where a guy is willing to import and sell Vive's for R24500!!! Is he just being bonkers, or is the Vive that much more expensive than the Oculus? I can't remember seeing anything about the Vive being double the price of an Oculus.

Either way, I am not currently interested in buying a VR device. I would like to test it out, but it is just too expensive at the moment.

Great article thanks for the info Jan.

What I also think is that, when the Oculus Rift does come to SA finally, people should expect to pay less than this imported price. I cannot see the Rift going for anything less than R12k once it reaches our shores via retail channels. I would also hazard a guess and say the Vive would probably be more in line with R17k once it reaches here.

The point being that, this should be a really serious option for would-be owners of VR tech.
