    The Point of Waning Interest

Sometimes, you get so into side-quests that the main story suffers as a result

I felt exactly the same way about a Wii game called No More heroes, you get thrusted into an awesome story, and then all of a sudden you have to go and do mini-games all around the city. It's a great game, but stuff like that irritates me.

IMO, Far Cry 2 exemplifies the worst instance of side-missions spoiling an otherwise good game.

Interstingly, MMOs like WoW consist mostly of completing what are essentially side missions.

For me it was around level 11 to well that is as far as I got ;-). But Far Cry 2 was horribly bad at that, also Oblivion sometimes too.

Far Cry 2 I gave up on. I don't know if it is just me, but I haven't finished Dragon Age or Fallout yet, I just lost interest

Happened to me in FFXIII after 21hrs 35min. I am going to get back to it but I have Splintercell Conviction I want to finish first.

I'm finding that Mass Effect 2 is doing a great job of holding my interest currently - mainly because it never forces you to meander away from the core story, but it still gives you plenty of scope for completing side quests in your own pace. And the side quests tend to enhance the main plot as well.
