i am such a quake fan, i've thought of getting a quake 1 tattoo.... Getting more and more serious about doing it to. Quake is part of my gaming dna.
But, i enjoy ut very much as well, i mean i own physical copies of all unreal en ut games, even ut2k3.

Got in some game time this morning, played TDM and some DM.

Good:
QUAKE IS BACK!
Renditions of older maps, feel and play so well now.
Free to play.
Customisation is simply cosmetic.
Little voice lines after re-spawning are pretty nice, specially since many of them refer back to older Quake titles**
Class based system is nice, with HP/Armor/Speed stats*

Bad: *Class based system is a little 'iffy' at the moment, sometime champions can tank way more damage or boost damage to make one shot deadly..
**Some voice lines can be annoying after hearing them 10 times in a row.
System specs meet the low requirements, still lags in some places (It's a BETA)
Zoom damage, can be deadly in long passages.

Ugly: No Local Data centre means anything above 100 is painful to play.
LAG is going to be the cause of 99% of your WTF Just happened deaths. I was dying in so many strange ways, simply because I was lagging too much.

Final opinion: If we had local servers, 10/10! No servers makes it not worth getting, sadly.

*edit* Browsed around the web a bit and it seems the Netcode is problematic.

I played a couple of matches where my ping was around 20-30ms... Is it server based or peer to peer?

I realised I am just too slow in my reactions to be good at twitch shooters. The gameplay is SUPER fast, and I struggle to keep up. After a while of playing I got better, but was exhausted! :P

How did you get 20-30ms ping? I was constantly at 180-200ms. It's server based from what I can tell since it asks which server you want to connect to when it starts.

I tried the game out during last weeks Closed beta - I got 170ms +- Average while playing, didn't get a chance to play again during this new beta window. I found the duel mode to be really fun, the TDM and FFA was a bit crazy to get used to again in the few games I played.


I may have a spare beta key if anyone is keen. I'll have to check.
