Default Newbie to the Gaming World

    hi everyone

im new to PC gaming and would like to get some help. Played alot of xbox 360

i have a gaming laptop (Aspire V Nitro - Black Edition) which i hook up to my tv via HDMI and play using a wireless keyboard and mouse. i know there is some lag from using wireless devices but sitting at my desk for hours results in some major headaches.

ive only ever played offline games and recently have been introduced into the world of online gaming by some friends.

currently playing Overwatch and loving it.

im struggling to find a decent pair of wireless gaming headsets thats not too expensive. any recommendations ?

what should i look into in regards to Steam ?

Hey Shaun, welcome to MyGaming and the PCMR!

I'm not much help as an info source on wireless headsets, but reckon you need to define "not too expensive" a little clearer for those that are before anyone could give you a fair suggestion.

Also, in terms of what to look for on Steam... is it more of an Overwatch vibe you're looking for - team-based multiplayer stuff? Team Fortress and Counter Strike come to mind, although from what I gather (never played it personally) Overwatch has a pretty unique approach to that sort of gameplay so anything else may be a bit disappointing? Again, I'm sure there's many more knowledgeable MyGamers about who'll chime in soon. What sort of titles did you enjoy playing on the XBox?

im looking in the R1500 range for a decent headset

ive been told by my friend's son that i should look into steam gaming... at a quick glance i saw alot of "flash" style games.

on the xbox i played mainly adventure single player games (dantes inferno, wolverine origins, prince of persia, etc) and 1st person shooters

Steam is a multi-publisher digital distribution service. Think XBox Store, but for a huge variety of PC games (primarily PC, they also do some Linux and Mac sales). The catalogue of games available on Steam recently went through the 10000 mark I seem to remember. Not everything is available on Steam, and there are still a number of titles that are not available in South Africa, but they did recently introduce SA Rand pricing and that has helped reduce the cost of a lot of games for us here.

Steam is not the only source of digital distribution for games, it's just the largest and where many indi developers position their games - probably part of the reason that you saw a lot of "flash" games?

EA/Origin (Rand pricing), UbiSoft (Euro prices) and Microsoft (Rand pricing) all maintain their own online stores as well and many of their newer titles never get to Steam. Also Good Old Games (better known as GOG) is another place you could check out for older titles, some of which are not available on Steam (check Steam first though in case it is and you can get it for Rands as GOG price in US$)

Still can't help you with headset or FPS recommendations, but SP adventure titles which you might enjoy the benefits of on PC - Witcher 3, Mad Max, Rise of the Tomb Raider, and maybe the upcoming Mafia 3 as well. Shooter-wise, all the talk at the moment is about Battlefield 1 (out October), and COD: Infinite Warfare (out November).

I am going to be that one guy. I wouldn't recommend gaming headphones, personally I would save that money and buy something little more pricey.

i cant use my home entertainment system because of how far i sit from the laptop.

for me the sound is perfect but for the other players they get an echo from my built-in mic

Understandable, but I was more referring to don't buy a headphones till you saved up for more expensive ones. However nvm, talking about 6k here. Like I said I'm that one guy that will tell you not to buy gaming audio equipment.

Steam has something of everything. Its why I like them. Shaunnadan, the nickname is familair.

Have a look on wootware, evetech and takealot for headsets - it depends on what you want, what you will get.
