    Question Gaming with KIDS....?

    Hello

Im curious to know how this community approaches gaming with kids. My 5 year old absolutely loves shooting and blowing $41t up. I have tried limiting this to shooting aliens and what ever else isn't human or actually roams the earth and doesn't involve huge amounts of gore (zombies included). However I am not sure if such games are any good for him in terms of his development and ability to understand what is going.

We do have Lego games but he tends to get bored of these pretty quickly. World of tanks is another title that he enjoys but interest has dropped over the past few weeks.

I thought I would Google how this gameplay affects kids but I pretty much read what I already knew - VIOLENT GAMES ARE BAD. But for every article like this I could always find the polar opposite

So, how do YOU approach gaming with your kids?

My nephew (8) is addicted to games and plays all sorts of shooting and adventure games, with his favourite series being Uncharted. Now despite being exposed to violent games he still manages to do exceptionally well in school and in fact came second in his class this year. I suppose it all comes down to moderation and carefully choosing what you let your kids play. My nephew started out with Minecraft and moved onto other games from there, though he still goes back to Minecraft often. Obviously my sister won't let him watch me play Doom, but they do let him play a wide variety of games and yes some of them depict violence. Is he worse off for it? No, I don't think so. Yes, he can be hyperactive but what young boy isn't?

I think the most important thing is to not substitute video games for attention. Give your child plenty of attention, limit their game time and encourage them to partake in other activities and you shoud be fine. At least that's what I see my sister doing and her child seems to be turning out okay so far.

My 9 year old has been playing games on his Xbox since 18 months. His favorite games are Gears of War, Call of Duty, FarCry and some zombie games on Xbox360 and it hasn't affected him. He is also one of the top achievers in his class.

Thanks for the replies. He is still pretty active outdoors and most of the time he would rather play outside than shoot zombies. I guess he goes through phases.

Played R&C yesterday. Doesn't seem to bad
