steam: quake 1 / quake 2 (or the oldies if you have them :P) - openGL 'revisited' mod

Necuno

The Piper
after not getting q1 to just work when i try opengl quake i stumbled on this and was impressed that both darkplaces was still going on as i thought it died out with Tenebrae. you can how ever just get the darkplaces mod for q1 without the music or textures here, but music is nice and those textures even more so;)

...Q1 ultra patch (dark places + music) - also for it's expansions

...Q2 ultra patch (KMQuake2 )

q1 can also have the "uber" texture pack added at just 2.7 gig :D, but it does look awesome ;)

not sure where q2's uber texture packs is...

i used the ultra patch install + ultra texture pack. easiest to get it to work and override every thing was to just extract the ultra texture pack into the ID1 folder.

must say.... quake is not quake without NiN :D

So does it look better than the Tenebrae mod? I played it once a few years back and it looked really nice, but ran a little crappy on my Geforce 7600GS :p.

dude, i totally have forgotten about both tenebrae and darkplaces. then after getting it from steam i found out that dark places was not canned and is alive and well. the quake mod i've seen so far is something called '100 years of quake' or 'quake 100 years', but i think that thing died off :(

i had however bit of a struggle to get steam quake1 working in win7 64x and the google lead me to that steam thread which made me get the collection of things to get it working and so far the easiest setup is basically the Ultra patch which installs the darkplaces and the sound tracks right into quake. then just extract the Ultra pack into the ID1 directory.

does it look better?, well so far i think darkplaces runs better than tenebrae.... i could remember there was bit of finder pointing from darkplaces to tenebrae and vice versa of who stole what and who's is better.

for now just running darkplaces :)

i remember looking for a cool open source engine / mod to use for a little game project. i ran into both of these and even though they made Q1 look like a new game, i gave them a miss... its time to try them again :) thanks for the reminder!
