Fun, i was by coincidence looking into exactly that sort of thing for a gaming night with friends (on the Xbox). The games that did pop up in my searches, requirements were: Must be easy to get into , without any instruments/kinect requirements (since i don't have any) and "accommodate any number of players". That last bit means, if it's a 2-player local, then it must be tournament based to allow quick player swopout.

My discovery (other than the ones in the article):
    Diablo 3 : 4 players local coop
Halo: Master Chief Collection: 2 players local coop / 4 players local tournies (i.e. ctf/deathmatch etc)
Mortal Kombat XL : 2 players local versus (this game is on special right now, hence me noticing it, but i am missing tag team coop here)
Forza 6 : local 2player splitscreen (i would have prefered this on Forza 3 Horizons, but alas!)
Lara Croft & Temple of Osiris : local 4 player coop
