No pardon my idiocracy... but how do they define "units sold" ?

Is it the amount of units that were released from their manufacturing plants (and possibly lie in stockpiles at game/makro/Ikea)? Or does it reflect actual customer/end user sales? - If so, how do they become aware of it?

I was one of them fools... No actually I enjoy me Wii. Great party console for when friends are over. no rocket science, everyone can just play. When I want to get down with intense console gaming I rather buy a game for xbox.

It refers to "shipped" units, so units sent off to retail stores to be bought by consumers.

The retailers do buy the units from Nintendo, so its fair to say that Nintendo has sold them once they ship them.

However, recently Sony have started saying that their "units sold" refers to actual units sold to consumers. Im not sure how they keep a record of that though

Well I'd imagine with something like XBL they could pick up serials etc of individual console units (even with multiple xbl accounts) and work out a figure from there - but there will be _PLENTY_ 12yr olds who got some for xmas and never play online.

Which figure is of more use to us? Amount sold or amount used? i.e. which one will game dev's look at (even though we all know which one they SHOULD be looking at) when they make games available on certain platforms?

I wonder if the price of the Wii will be coming down this year.

Yeah I just don't get it... the American push for the Wii is probably to blame... as far as the definition of the word "gaming" goes, it sure is fun and entertaining... but it just doesn't come close to the PS3 or Xbox 360 when you want to immerse yourself in a game - and then there's the pricing...
