I suppose 1st person is fine for shooters so for Borderlands and games where you just run-and-gun, it is ok. For everything else, 3rd person, especially if there are sneaking, taking cover or any other functions involved.
My problem in general with 1st person is that the main character is always in a neck-brace. He can't look left or right without turning his whole body. Even if it was possible, the extra keys wouldn't make it feasible. Deus Ex does do it nicely though with switching to 3rd person when taking cover. With Fallout and Skyrim, I tend to switch between the two modes as I play because the 3rd person mode isn't really implemented properly which makes aiming a mission (can't remember if this was improved with Fallout 4).
