I'll be honest, I was one of those that pirated Game of Thrones. There was literally no legal way for me to watch the season. It's not on any streaming service I had access to, so had no other choice.
Not even counting the people who copied it from a pirate friend.

And I'm pretty sure you guys can agree, the amount we pirate these days (well, for me at least) is virtually 0. I haven't pirated a game in years, I've never needed to do that. Same with music, I've got Google Play Music, Netflix, Showmax, Xbox Gold and now Xbox Game Pass. What the bloody hell do I want to pirate.
But, there are 3 shows that are deal breakers, Game of Thrones, Westworld and The Grand Tour. These are difficult, if not impossible for South Africans to see as they release without pirating. And yes, we all have FOMO with that one or two series. We want to be part of the excitement and the hype of a show, with the rest of the world.
Yeah can agree, we had a discussion about this.
Game pirating
Just couldn't be bothered anymore, I mean I have a game list that I regularly play and they satisfy my gaming needs. Pirating is just annoying, bugs, exe fixes. When you have done all the pirating work to get the game working, then you find out there is a bug in V1.0 that stops you from playing. After that I just couldn't be bothered patching and finding an exe. This results in me going back to my regular games.
Movies
Honestly the rubbish that comes out of hollywood is generic stories. So if i do pirate a movie I know it didn't cost me R70 a ticket and R50 for food and drinks. Then when i finished watching I don't feel robbed.
Series
Eh. Yeah GOT and Westworld are champ series. But the netflixes, showmax, etc just dont broadcast it and Im paying for it. So yeah deal with me being a pirate.
The core of everything is the license story, they love to say licenses is the reason why we don't get content. Well then speak to Mr. License cause Mr. License is why I pirate.
Yep, I'm sorted with games, music, books, all kinds of stuff. But even with having Netflix and Showmax I find myself pirating movies and series.
My wife and I watch a movie every Sunday evening. If there's something interesting on Netflix then we'll watch that but more often than not I download something. Series we are spoiled with but there are some series that I had to download. Like The Leftovers (love that show!), Game of Thrones, Gotham and Westworld.
I'm just not going to pay for Dstv when I already pay for two tv services.
Yes, you guys are right. Our limited access to series and movies via our streaming services does warrant pirating of something else that people actually want to watch. I guess for me personally, I'm so behind with movies and series. I don't binge like I always do. I think that's why Showmax and Netflix works for me. It keeps me entertained when I want to watch something.
But I totally get why anyone else will still pirate movies and series.
