Brothers a tale of two sons, it still remains the most heart filled story I have ever played and that's from a game where you can't and are not meant to understand a single word that is spoken. I played it just after I finished the last of us and I received a lot of flack for saying I think it's story hits you harder than tlou

    Enslaved: Odyssey to the West
Not sure what I was expecting when I first started it, but it ended up having a truly great and memorable story.

Some of my most surprising picks of recent games (off the top of my head) are To The Moon, Life is Strange, Code 7, Digital: A Love Story, and Analogue: A Hate Story.

This is excluding a bunch of games with great stories I wouldn't say caught me by surprise. Though by that measure, Analogue's good story shouldn't have been much of a surprise considering how much I enjoyed Digital, I guess.

Another game that immediately came to mind was the old Strike Commander. I was expecting a straight-forward combat flight simulator and instead got something with a great story and interesting management mechanics.

Firewatch for me was a gem, something totally different. Like reading a good short story.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story of Final Fantasy x and mass effect (well im still playing this one almost 10 years now), to be honest i think COD 4 actually had a very good hollywoodish storyline
