The stories are so generic. I'll sum them all up : You are a soldier and you have been put in a bad situation. You have to fight your way though the scenario.

The rest of the story is just padding.

    Are those AAA shooters only?

Are you sure there were 50 shooters released in 2005 and only 9 in 2015? Seems rather unlikely to me.

That said the overall trend sounds plausible.

One point I'd add is economics: Making a AAA shooter costs more than a movie and is a multi-year risky commitment. Not many shops have the appetite for that. Better to smash a "indie" game out in 2 months and pump it full of microtransactions.

I really miss the COD4 / BFBC2 days though. That was epic.

Another thing that really put me off the later games is that they felt straight up sluggish. CoD4 with some tweaking was razorsharp. BFBC2...less so but still there. CS and unreals too. But get to the later CoDs & BFs...do what you like it's still a tiny bit sluggish even with good framerates.

Yes, the numbers I took was from lists of all AAA title or bigger more well know FPS shooters for the year. There are obviously a huge amount of indie games released every month, and a lot of them will be FPS shooters. But the point of this investigation was the fact that big budget AAA style FPS shooters are on the decline. I was busy with lists of my own for 2017, and noticed that there was a shockingly low amount of these games that came out this year.
