Must be nice being an analyst, being paid for spewing out any nonsense they can come up with.
Who knows, maybe he is right! I mean, surely they can cut out the Blu Ray and then install a DVD player and Linux with a Virtual PC/Xbox emulated on the powerfull PS3 hardware. Then the PS3 can play all the Xbox and PC titles. Crysis included. LOL.
Yeah unfortunatly there are fools like that!!
Maybe he should just go lay down before he hurts himself!!

Penguin:Not for a moment did I think you were being serious.
I still have my reservations about emulating a gaming PC on PS3. ;-)
I am guessing that you would have to get Windows shoehorned into working on the
Cell architecture and then pare it down so that it fits comfortably within the PS3's
512Mb of memory, while leaving sufficient memory for running PC games in all their
glory.Methinks it would take some smart programming to make the GeForce 7800 on which the PS3's Reality Synthesiser is based compete with nVidia and AMD's finest.
As I am not a programmer or hardware guru, I cannot say with any degree of authority that it cannot be done. As a layperson, I say that It looks as though anyone wanting to emulate PC on PS3 has their work cut out for them.
=|This space for rent|=
Did I miss it in the article or where was it mentioned that the DVD-drive replacing the Blu-ray drive was to compete with the PC?
The only reason I saw was for costs.
I actually don't see this prediction so far-fetched.The economy and companies are not doing good, everyone is trying to save money wherever they can.
They could easily bring out an alternative PS3 DVD-drive version in addition to their current Blu-Ray one. I am willing to bet that there will be people buying them. It can make quite a difference on the overall price.
PLUS, sony is STILL making a loss on every PS3. How long can this continue?
There are loads of people (I know several) who don't want to buy the PS3 because they either 1/ do not want the blu-ray drive 2/ don't have anything to play on it 3/ cannot afford it.
On the tangent of it becoming a PC competitor, yes it can. XP / Vista does have a mobile / tablet version and there is also an extremely light version that install in under 300-500MB of disk space. So, why can't this be ported to the PS3 or any other console for that matter? GPU's are doing more and more processing than ever before.
Nothing is impossible in this day and age.

What the mind can conceive, it can achieve.
You are thinking the same as the analyst. The problem being that the PS3 with a DVD-drive will not be able to play any games since the games come on Blu-Ray. Hence it won't be a game console anymore.
The PS3 may not have done as well as they have hoped but I do believe that it's because of it that Blu-Ray won the HD war.
